This week is Te Waotu School’s annual Maths Week. Every day of the week, we are given an estimating sheet to take home. On the paper is an activity that either the whole school or the staff are going to complete. Each member of the family writes their name and estimate on the sheet, then the sheet is put in the office box every morning.
Monday’s activity was how many smarties can the staff transfer from one bucket to another ten metres away in two minutes in relay form? The staff managed to get 17 smarties in the time given. On Tuesday our estimate was how many children from different ages could fit in the school sand pit. It turns out we could fit 196 children in our sand pit. We ran out of children so we just filled up half of the sand pit and then doubled it.
Other than Math’s Week our class has been learning a bit about the Beijing Olympics and China. We have an information sheet to complete in our co-operative groups with timelines and basic facts about China’s history. I learnt that the ancient Chinese used abacuses to calculate numbers, and that the Mongols invaded China and set up the Yuan Dynasty between 1279 and 1368 AD.
